We went to Borth every year from when I was about five to fourteen. It's a wonderful area. I remember waiting for a train at Dovey Junction, and it seemed so timeless, cupped by hills, nothing but the sun, the marsh, the gulls. And inland some equally lovely places; I recall hedgerows thick with honeysuckle, driving past that huge waterwheel at Furnace, going to Machynlleth, then the incredible rough and wildly wooded land round Devils Bridge. It's a magical part of Wales.

I used to go to Aberdovey every year! From birth up until maybe fifteen. My parents had decided to go back there for holiday this year, so I thought I would tag along, I don't get to see them much any more, so it was nice to revisit a place of fond memories with them.
This was actually the first time I had been to Borth, I knew there were cliffs there so thought I'd go for a look, I was hoping to see the submerged forest but the tide never got low enough. It's a bit of a building site there at the moment, but that was away from the cliffs so it was all good!
Funnily enough I also went for a wander around Devils Bridge, all those steps! Unfortunately, as is often the case in Wales, it was raining rather heavily, so I was unable to get any decent shots!
I love this part of Wales though, it's somewhere that I'll continue to go back to.

Oh, did you walk down the Jacob's Ladder steps, (the opposite side from the Devil's Punchbowl?) I was about 13 and realized then I was no good with heights! The rain does turn even the smallest stream to a torrent, though, which is beautiful in its way.
Aberdyfi is a charming little place; I was just looking at cottages and holidays there, thinking it would be lovely to go back. We generally go further north now, into Snowdonia, but the Borth/Aberdyfi area is gentler, but no less picturesque.

Jacobs Ladder! That's the one! I'm not too bad with heights, but those steps are pretty hairy, especially in the wet! So steep it actually has guard rails every five steps or so, to stop you tumbling all the way down incase you loose your footing! Despite the pouring rain it was still worth a visit.
There are plenty of B+B's and self-catering cottages or apartments around that area. I was staying at a B+B called The Vanner, just on from the jetty area, overlooking the estuary. There was some on-street parking outside, but it was hard to get a space, however, there is a free car-park down the other end of town near the train station, it's a bit of a walk, but it's free so can't grumble!

When I was there it did not, but that was um...early 80's? Health and safety was a warning sign and hand-rails XD) Luckily it was not wet, I seem to remember, but my legs were like spaghetti. It was worth it though.
Thank-you for the recc. The last time I went through there was on a train going up to Llanaber, above Barmouth to stay with a relative, but it would be lovely to make it a base for a holiday. A shame the weather let you down, as it can be wonderful, but it's always beautiful. And there are nesting ospreys on the Dyfi estuary, and otters, which I would love to see!
